Photogrammetry in The Hunger Games : Catching Fire
Method Studios used Enwaii for the construction by photogrammetry of Victors' village environment and for the creation of assets like the digital version of Capitol's armoured vehicles in the movie The Hunger Games : Catching Fire.
Victors' village
Victors’ village was built in 3D because only two half houses were built on set. The houses needed to be topped up with CG extensions and duplicated to add eight more CG houses on each side of the street.
In order to achieve this task, CG lead artist Jon Ossit used the photogrammetry suite Enwaii to reconstruct the textured ground floor and duplicate it to get the second floor.
Jon used Enwaii to calibrate the HDR images, to model directly inside Maya with the Enwaii toolkit and to bake the texture by camera projection. Final details were added by artists. Enwaii's float linear color pipeline and export capabilities made it the perfect assistants for the artists when dealing with high quality photogrammetry texturing.
Capitol's armoured vehicles
In the story, the Capitol relies on armoured vehicles to carry peacekeepers troops. But the sequence of the entrance of the vehicules in District 12 required a higher number of vehicles than the two real vehicles available during shot. So a highly photorealistic full 3D copy of a vehicle was made by photogrammetry at Methos studios in order to add invading vehicles in the sequence.
As shown in the DVD special feature "Let if fly : production in Atlanta", only two of the line of vehicles are real, the others are CG models.
